Primarily Tempranillo, with a small amount of Graciano and Garnacha
2021 VINTAGE
A year with 30% more rainfall and irregular distribution. Following a warm February and normal budbreak, favorable weather in May accelerated vegetative growth. Rainfall in June and warm summer temperatures benefited the vineyards, while the rains in September promoted optimal ripening.
SOILS
Primarily clay-limestone. Plots in Rioja Alta with ferrous subsoil.
VINEYARDS AND YIELDS
A selection of old-vine plots from Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa. Low yields, less than 5,000 kg/ha.
HARVEST
Entirely hand-harvested into 15-kg crates, plot by plot. The effect of the frost forced a second flush of growth, making the harvest very challenging as we had to separate the ripe clusters from the unripe ones. We are pleased with this hard work of selection carried out both in the field and in the winery.
WINEMAKERS
Fernando Costa, Emilio González, and Manuel Iribarnegaray.
WINEMAKING
Bunches are destemmed with the utmost care. Alcoholic fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature. Prolonged maceration on the skins to extract more color, aromas, and tannic structure. Malolactic fermentation in oak barrels and stainless steel tanks. Once malolactic fermentation is complete, all wines are transferred to fine-grained French oak barrels. Subsequent racking takes place every 6 months.
TOTAL TIME IN BARREL
Approximately 21 months in French oak barrels, divided equally among new barrels and one- and two-year-old barrels.
BOTTLE AGING
A minimum of 2 years prior to the release date.
Tasting Notes
A deep, dense ruby color.
Elegant on the nose, its meticulous production and the passage of time harmonize in a seamless blend of diverse aromas. Ripe fruit, such as blueberry jam, is evident, along with spicy notes (clove) and delicate hints of toasted bread and leather.
Very complex on the palate, with notable body and length. Balanced, silky tannins with a smooth texture lend a rich, luscious body, free from any dry, harsh edges. It conveys great elegance while revealing substance and vibrancy. The finish is long and complex, dominated by spicy notes and a tantalizing aftertaste that invites you to continue discovering the wine in all its facets.
